Public Health Week 2026

In Honor of Public Health Week: 2026

What is Public Health?

Public health is all about keeping communities healthy and safe. And, often, it is in ways people may not even notice. Instead of focusing on one person at a time, public health looks at the big picture. Specifically, how can we care for entire communities?

We ask questions like, how do we:
• Prevent illness and injury?
• Protect our communities?
• Make sure everyone has a fair chance to live well?

We Prevent Disease
• We track and aim to stop the spread of illnesses like measles, flu, RSV, and valley fever.
• We monitor outbreaks of various viral and bacterial infections in the county.

We Protect Families
• We promote healthy lifestyle habits like using seatbelts, helmets, and child car seats to prevent injuries.
• We provide in-home visits and maternity classes through our Healthy Families San Joaquin program.
• We manage the county branch of California Children’s Services, a statewide program that arranges, directs, and pays for medical care, equipment, and rehabilitation for children and young adults under 21 years of age, who have CCS eligible medical conditions.
• We lead vaccination events to keep children and families healthy and disease-free.

We Plan for Emergencies
• We prepare for disasters like earthquakes, floods, extreme heat, and wildfires, so communities can respond quickly and stay safe.

We Support Healthy Living

• We run programs like Safe Kids to promote car seat usage and safety, and facilitate the Opioid Safety Coalition.
• We manage the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, providing education services for families, community groups and health care providers.
• We manage communicable disease programs, providing surveillance & case investigation of all reportable communicable diseases in the county.
• We provide nutrition support through the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program.

We Use Data to Improve Health
• We collect health information, use technology and share data. Oftentimes we use dashboards to display this info, which can be found on our website https://www.sjcphs.org. Our goal is to reduce poor health outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations.

We Manage Vital Records
• We process important documents like birth, marriage, and death certificates.
